Purdue #1 Black Walnut trees are genetically superior black walnut trees which are fast growing and straighter than the common black walnut seedlings. The plantation is in a sandy loam type of soil and is in a floodplain, which is excellent soils for growing Black Walnut trees. The plantation was well taken care of and each Walnut tree was limbed up to 20 ft, which should produce more veneer logs in the future. This specific plantation is so special it was the location of the annual Walnut Counsel for 2006 and 2012. The trees were planted in north / south and east / west rows which was specifically designed to enhance the amount of sunlight hitting the trees. This row spacing and design also allows for the plantation to be mowed each direction if you desire. However, the Walnuts trees are tall enough and are currently out pacing all other trees and shrubs, so not much maintenance is required. The plantation was also planted with a nurse crop of Black Locust trees, which produce nitrogen in the ground and therefore aide in the Walnut tree growth. Again the Walnut trees are outgrowing the Black Locust trees, which could be harvested for fence posts or used for firewood. The property is located at the confluence of 2 creeks which offers great recreation opportunities including whitetail deer and turkey hunting. There is an excellent space for camping and plenty of access to the creeks for good fishing and a place to get a canoe or kayak in or out of the river.
